Equality & Human Rights

At Alex C&C Healthcare, we champion a culture of inclusion where every person is treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

Our Statement on Inclusion,

Equality & Human Rights

Alex C&C Healthcare Ltd is founded on the belief that everyone deserves to live with dignity, irrespective of their background or identity. We are committed to fostering an environment where equality, diversity, and human rights are not just policies, but lived experiences for every individual we support and every team member we employ.

Equality & Human Rights in Action

At Alex C&C Healthcare, equality, diversity, inclusion and human rights influence every part of our organisation. They shape how we provide care, recruit and support our workforce, develop our team, make decisions and continually improve our services. Our commitments are reflected in practical actions, respectful relationships and accountable leadership.

Inclusive, Person-Centred Care

We recognise each person as an individual with their own identity, history, relationships, abilities, beliefs and preferences. Care planning and delivery must respect people’s choices, preferred names, pronouns, culture, religion or belief, communication needs, dietary requirements, family relationships and personal routines.

Fair Recruitment & Employment

We are committed to fair, inclusive and accessible recruitment and employment practices. Applicants and employees are treated with respect regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy, sex or sexual orientation. We consider reasonable adjustments and support professional development.

Responsible Leadership & Governance

Our leadership team is responsible for ensuring that equality and human rights are reflected in organisational decisions. We monitor standards through governance reviews, audits, and supervision. Concerns involving dignity or unequal treatment are taken seriously.

Learning, Quality & Improvement

We strengthen inclusive practice through induction, training and reflective learning. Our curriculum includes human rights, disability awareness and cultural inclusion. Feedback is used to improve the experience of the people we support and our staff.

“Our commitment is measured by how people experience our care, our workplace and our leadership — not simply by what is written in our policies.”

Equality in Daily Practice

Equality becomes meaningful through the way people are treated every day. At Alex C&C Healthcare, we take time to understand the identity, history, relationships, beliefs, preferences and communication needs of every person we support. We adapt our care so that each individual feels recognised, respected, safe and able to remain themselves.

Alex C&C Healthcare LGBTQ

Identity, Names & Pronouns

We address people by the name, title and pronouns they ask us to use. A person’s gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation or personal history must never reduce the respect, privacy or quality of care they receive. Transgender, non-binary and LGBTQ+ people are supported without assumptions, intrusive questioning, prejudice or judgement.

Alex C&C Healthcare family

Relationships & Chosen Family

We recognise and respect same-sex partners, spouses, civil partners, close friends, advocates and chosen family members. With the person’s consent, those who are important to them can be appropriately involved in care discussions and planning. We do not make assumptions about relationships or give one family structure greater value than another.

Culture, Faith & Daily Life

Alex C&C Healthcare earth

Care is planned around the person’s cultural identity, religion or belief, spiritual needs, routines and way of life. This may include prayer times, religious observance, clothing preferences, modesty, food preparation, fasting, dietary requirements, festivals, preferred gender of carer where reasonably possible, and culturally important personal-care practices.

Communication & Understanding

Alex C&C Healthcare Communication

We ask how each person prefers to communicate and make reasonable adjustments to support understanding and participation. This may include clear language, visual information, larger print, communication aids, additional time, interpreters, advocates, communication passports or support for hearing, sight, learning disability, autism, neurodiversity or language needs.

Choice, Consent & Independence

Alex C&C Healthcare Consent

We explain care before it is provided, seek valid consent and respect the person’s right to make choices about their own life. People are encouraged to do as much as they can for themselves and to take positive, proportionate risks. Where capacity is in question, we follow the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and ensure that decisions are not based on disability, age, diagnosis, appearance or communication style.

Privacy, Dignity & Personal Care

Alex C&C Healthcare Privacy

Personal care is delivered sensitively, discreetly and without unnecessary exposure. We respect privacy, confidentiality, personal boundaries and preferences about how support is provided. Carers knock before entering private spaces, explain what they are doing and avoid discussing personal information where it may be overheard.

What This Can Mean in Practice

recording and using the person’s preferred name and pronouns

recognising a same-sex partner as the person’s partner

respecting clothing, modesty and personal-care preferences

supporting prayer, worship and religious observance

adapting meals to cultural, medical and religious requirements

arranging accessible information or an interpreter where needed

giving additional processing time without rushing the person

involving an advocate or chosen representative with consent

respecting a person’s decision even when others may disagree

challenging discriminatory language, behaviour or assumptions

protecting private information about sexuality, gender identity, health, relationships or beliefs

Person-centred care means more than completing care tasks. It means seeing the whole person, respecting what matters to them and ensuring they never have to hide an important part of who they are to receive safe and compassionate support.

Fair & Inclusive Recruitment

We assess applicants fairly against the requirements of the role and do not tolerate discrimination. Recruitment decisions must not be influenced by age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation. Every applicant should be treated professionally, consistently and with respect.

An Inclusive Workplace

Our employees should feel safe to be themselves at work. We respect different cultures, faiths, identities, family structures, sexual orientations, gender identities and personal circumstances. Bullying, harassment, victimisation and discriminatory behaviour are not accepted.

Accessible Recruitment

Applicants can tell us about any reasonable adjustments or communication support they may require during the recruitment process. Requests will be considered respectfully, sensitively and confidentially.

accessible application processes

alternative communication arrangements

additional time where appropriate

accessible interview locations

support with attending interviews

reasonable workplace adjustments

fair access to training and development

We recruit people for their values, abilities, experience and potential. Our aim is to create a workforce that reflects the communities we support and where everyone has a fair opportunity to belong, contribute and develop.

Alex C&C Healthcare

Inclusive Employment, Recruitment & Disability Confident

At Alex C&C Healthcare, we believe that a diverse and supported workforce provides stronger, more compassionate care. We are committed to fair, inclusive and accessible recruitment, equal opportunities in employment and a workplace where every person is treated with dignity, respect and fairness.

Disability Confident & Reasonable Adjustments

We support the principles of Disability Confident and work to remove unnecessary barriers for disabled applicants and employees. Reasonable adjustments may be considered during recruitment, induction, training and employment so that individuals can participate fully and demonstrate their abilities.

Development, Wellbeing & Progression

We provide induction, supervision, training and development opportunities that help employees build confidence and progress in their careers. We encourage open communication, support staff wellbeing and aim to create a workplace where every contribution is recognised and valued.

Accessibility & Communication

Clear and accessible communication is essential to safe, respectful and person-centred care. At Alex C&C Healthcare, we ask each person how they prefer to receive, understand and share information. Communication and accessibility needs are recorded, shared appropriately with the care team and reviewed whenever circumstances change.

Communication Preferences

We ask how each person prefers to communicate and what helps them understand information, express choices and participate in decisions. Preferences may include spoken communication, written information, visual prompts, gestures, familiar routines or support from an appropriate representative.

Hearing & Visual Needs

Where a person has hearing or visual impairment, we consider practical adjustments such as clearer positioning, reduced background noise, good lighting, larger print, accessible electronic information, communication aids and additional time. Specialist advice may be sought where required.

Learning Disability & Easy-to-Understand Information

Information should be presented in a way the person can understand. This may include plain language, shorter explanations, pictures, demonstrations, repetition, Easy Read-style information or breaking decisions into manageable steps without speaking down to the person.

Autism, Neurodiversity & Mental Health

We recognise that sensory environments, processing time, routines, anxiety and different communication styles can affect how a person experiences care. Staff should listen, avoid unnecessary pressure, provide predictability where possible and follow the person’s individual care and communication guidance.

Language, Interpretation & Advocacy

Where language creates a barrier, we seek an appropriate communication solution. This may include professional interpretation, translated information where available, an independent advocate or another agreed arrangement. Relatives should not automatically be relied upon for sensitive, complex or confidential interpretation.

Recording & Sharing Communication Needs

Important communication and accessibility requirements are recorded within care planning documentation and communicated appropriately to the staff providing support. This may include communication passports, preferred methods, sensory needs, reasonable adjustments and guidance about how to recognise agreement, distress or refusal.

We aim to make our digital information clear, readable and easy to navigate. Accessibility improvements are reviewed as part of our ongoing website and communication development.

How We Make Communication More Accessible

asking the person directly about their preferences

allowing additional time to process and respond

avoiding unnecessary jargon

checking understanding rather than making assumptions

using pictures, prompts or communication aids

providing larger or clearer written information where possible

reducing background noise and distractions

involving an advocate when appropriate

respecting non-verbal communication

recording and reviewing reasonable adjustments

ensuring people can express consent, choice, discomfort and concerns

Accessible communication is not an additional favour. It is an essential part of dignity, safety, consent, equality and meaningful involvement in care.

Governance, Accountability & Human Rights

Equality, inclusion and human rights require clear leadership and ongoing accountability. At Alex C&C Healthcare, these principles are incorporated into our governance, care planning, workforce practices, quality monitoring and organisational decision-making. We review how people experience our services, respond to concerns and use learning to strengthen respectful, safe and person-centred care.

Leadership Accountability

Our Registered Manager and leadership team are responsible for promoting equality, dignity and human rights throughout the organisation. They must ensure that policies, care practices, recruitment decisions and workplace conduct reflect our values and legal responsibilities.

Quality Assurance & Auditing

We use care-plan reviews, observations, supervision, spot checks, audits, incident reviews and quality monitoring to assess whether people are being treated fairly, respectfully and in accordance with their individual needs.

Alex C&C Healthcare management

Listening, Feedback & Speaking Up

People receiving care, families, employees and professionals are encouraged to share feedback, raise concerns and challenge poor practice. Complaints, surveys, and whistleblowing help us understand people’s experiences.

Policies, Learning & Improvement

Our policies and working practices are reviewed to reflect legislation and regulatory expectations. Findings from audits and complaints are used to improve training, care planning and service delivery.

How Accountability Works

Listen & Identify

Record & Review

Respond & Act

Learn & Improve

Monitor & Reassess

We gather feedback, recognise concerns and identify barriers, inequalities or risks.

Relevant information is recorded and reviewed through appropriate governance or quality processes.

Immediate concerns are addressed and proportionate action is taken to protect dignity and rights.

Learning is used to update care plans, policies, training and organisational practice.

Changes are monitored to determine whether they have improved people’s experiences.

Our Governance Framework

Our approach is informed by the Equality Act 2010, Human Rights Act 1998, Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005, the Health and Social Care Act 2008, CQC Fundamental Standards and the Accessible Information Standard. These frameworks support our responsibility to provide lawful, fair, safe and person-centred care.

Human rights are protected through everyday decisions: listening to the person, respecting consent, promoting independence, protecting privacy, recognising important relationships, preventing discrimination and taking action when standards are not met.

Accountability means demonstrating through evidence and experience that our commitments are being upheld.

Equality Monitoring & Organisational Oversight

Where appropriate and lawful, equality-related information, concerns, actions and improvement priorities may be monitored through governance records, audits and workforce information. Information is handled confidentially and used to identify barriers, improve access and strengthen fair treatment rather than to make assumptions about individuals.

Education, Inclusive Culture & Speaking Up

An inclusive culture is created through the way people learn, communicate and treat one another every day. At Alex C&C Healthcare, education, supervision, reflective practice and open discussion help our team provide respectful, person-centred care while creating a workplace where every voice is valued.

Equality, Diversity & Human Rights Learning

Our induction and ongoing learning help staff understand equality, dignity, respect and human rights in everyday care. Training connects organisational values and legal responsibilities with practical situations so that employees understand how inclusive care should be experienced by each person we support.

LGBTQ+ Inclusion

Staff are supported to understand respectful LGBTQ+ practice, including preferred names and pronouns, same-sex relationships, gender identity, privacy, confidentiality and chosen family. Transgender, non-binary, lesbian, gay and bisexual people must receive care and workplace support without judgement, assumptions, stereotyping or intrusive questioning.

Alex C&C Healthcare education and training

Disability & Accessible Practice

Learning includes visible and non-visible disability, reasonable adjustments, accessible communication, learning disability, autism, neurodiversity, sensory needs and mental health. Staff are encouraged to focus on each person’s abilities, choices and communication rather than making assumptions based on a diagnosis or disability.

Cultural & Religious Awareness

Our team is encouraged to learn about the cultural, religious and personal preferences of the people they support. This includes respecting prayer, worship, clothing, modesty, dietary requirements, fasting, festivals, family relationships and culturally important routines without relying on stereotypes.

Challenging Bias & Discrimination

We encourage staff to recognise and challenge unconscious bias, discriminatory language, harassment, bullying, victimisation and unequal treatment. Concerns are taken seriously, and employees are expected to act professionally when behaviour conflicts with dignity, equality, safeguarding or organisational values.

Continuous Professional Development

Inclusive practice is strengthened through induction, supervision, team meetings, reflective learning, competency development and refresher training. Feedback, incidents, complaints, compliments and lessons learned are used to identify development needs and improve the quality of care and workplace culture.

A Culture Where People Can Speak Up

Employees should feel able to ask questions, share ideas, admit mistakes, challenge unsafe or discriminatory practice and report concerns. Managers are expected to listen respectfully, protect confidentiality where appropriate and respond without victimising anyone who raises a genuine concern in good faith.

Recognise

Notice behaviour, decisions or practices that may affect safety, dignity, equality or human rights.

Speak

Raise the matter with an appropriate manager, senior colleague or through the relevant reporting process.

Respond

The concern is acknowledged, considered and escalated appropriately where necessary.

Learn

Actions and learning are used to improve practice, training, supervision, policies or organisational systems.

Freedom to Speak Up & Whistleblowing

Psychological Safety

A strong learning culture allows people to ask for help, discuss uncertainty and reflect on mistakes without humiliation. Psychological safety does not remove accountability; it helps staff be honest, learn sooner and prevent avoidable harm.

Staff may use the appropriate speaking-up or whistleblowing arrangements when they believe unsafe, unlawful, discriminatory or seriously improper practice is not being addressed. Raising a genuine concern should not result in bullying, retaliation or unfair treatment. Immediate safeguarding or safety concerns must be escalated without delay.

Inclusive leadership is not only about who is present.
It is about ensuring people are respected, able to contribute and confident that they will be heard when something matters.

Learning, openness and accountability help us provide better care and create a stronger workplace.

Protected Characteristics

The Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination connected with nine protected characteristics. At Alex C&C Healthcare, these protections influence how we provide care, recruit and support employees, communicate with families, deliver training and work with professionals. Every person must be treated fairly, respectfully and without prejudice.

Our commitment extends beyond legal compliance: we want every person to feel recognised, respected, safe and able to be themselves.

Age

We respect and support adults of all ages without making assumptions about their abilities, choices, lifestyle or potential. Care is based on each person’s assessed needs and preferences, while recruitment and employment decisions are based on fair and relevant requirements.

Disability

We recognise visible and non-visible disabilities, including physical, sensory, learning, neurological and mental health-related disabilities. We consider reasonable adjustments, accessible communication and individual support so that people can participate, exercise choice and access fair opportunities.

Gender Reassignment

Transgender people, including anyone proposing to transition, beginning a transition or who has transitioned, must be treated with dignity, privacy and respect. We use preferred names and pronouns, protect confidential information and do not require a person to undergo medical treatment to be respected.

Marriage & Civil Partnership

We respect marriages, civil partnerships and the legally recognised relationships of the people we support and employ. Partners must be acknowledged appropriately, without assumptions or unequal treatment, and involved in care discussions where the person has given consent.

Pregnancy & Maternity

Pregnant employees, new mothers and people on maternity leave must not experience disadvantage or discrimination. We consider appropriate workplace support, health and safety requirements and fair access to employment, training and development opportunities.

Race

We value people of every race, ethnicity, nationality and national origin. Racism, stereotyping and discriminatory treatment are not accepted. Our care should recognise cultural identity, communication needs, family traditions and personal preferences without making assumptions.

Religion or Belief

Sex

People must receive fair treatment and equal opportunities regardless of sex. We promote dignity, privacy, safety and respect in care and employment, while considering individual preferences and reasonable requests relating to personal care, modesty and the gender of the person providing support.

People must receive fair treatment and equal opportunities regardless of sex. We promote dignity, privacy, safety and respect in care and employment, while considering individual preferences and reasonable requests relating to personal care, modesty and the gender of the person providing support.

We respect different religions, beliefs and philosophical convictions, as well as the choice not to follow a religion. Care may be adapted to support prayer, worship, clothing, modesty, dietary requirements, fasting, religious festivals and spiritual practices wherever reasonably possible.

Sexual Orientation

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and heterosexual people must be treated with equal dignity and respect. We recognise same-sex partners, spouses and chosen family, protect privacy and confidentiality, and challenge assumptions, prejudice or discriminatory behaviour connected with sexual orientation.

What Protection Means in Practice

We do not tolerate direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, harassment, victimisation or unfair treatment. We listen when concerns are raised, consider reasonable adjustments, challenge prejudiced behaviour and review our practices to identify barriers that may affect the people we support, employees, applicants or others who work with us.

Equality does not mean treating every person identically. It means recognising individual circumstances, removing unfair barriers and ensuring that everyone receives dignity, respect and a fair opportunity to participate.

Our Promise to You

At Alex C&C Healthcare, equality, inclusion, dignity and human rights are not simply words within a policy. They are reflected in the way we listen, the way we provide care, the way we support our workforce and the way we respond when something is not right.

This is who we are.

This is what we believe.

This is the promise we make.

We promise to recognise every person as an individual, respect what matters to them and provide support without prejudice, assumptions or judgement. We will continue listening, learning and improving so that the people we support, their families, our employees and our partners feel respected, included, safe and valued.

We Will See the Individual

We will take time to understand each person’s identity, life history, relationships, culture, religion or belief, communication needs, abilities, preferences and personal goals.

We Will Respect Every Identity

We will respect preferred names, pronouns, gender identity, sexual orientation, relationships and chosen family. No person should feel that they must hide an important part of who they are to receive care or work with us.

We Will Listen & Respond

We will encourage people to express their wishes, concerns and experiences. Feedback, complaints and speaking-up concerns will be considered respectfully and used to strengthen our care, employment practices and organisational culture.

We Will Continue to Improve

We will continue learning, reviewing our practices and challenging barriers, bias and discrimination. Our commitment will be demonstrated through people’s experiences, not only through written policies.

Everyone deserves care and support that protects their dignity, respects their identity and enables them to live as the person they are.

At Alex C&C Healthcare, you are not expected to fit into our service. Our support should adapt to recognise and respect you.
